Hello, everyone. This is Korean Billy from the YouTube channel KoreanBilly. I am your guest presenter for Learn English with Cambridge for today’s video.

So before we move on, let’s talk about language skills. Language skills open up lots of opportunities to travel,
and the language skills also help you make a new life in a foreign country or even build up a new career.

So today, I’m going to meet someone who has already done what I said, Son Heung-min. He’s a Korean football player for Tottenham Hotspur.

이번 Learn English with Cambridge 영상의 일일 프레젠터를 맡게 되었습니다. 그럼 본격적으로 시작하기 전에 언어능력에  대해 이야기를 해볼게요. 언어능력은 여행을 할 수 있는 다양한 기회를 만들어주며, 또한 언어능력은 외국에서 새로운 생활을 시작할 때 도움을 주기도 하죠.

그게 아니더라도 새로운 커리어로 쌓을 수 있어요. 오늘 이 언어능력을 완성시킨 분을 만나보고자 합니다. 바로 손흥민 선수죠. 손흥민 선수는 현재 토트넘 소속의 한국인 축구 선수입니다.

As I said, he’s Korean, but he has learnt English and now his language skills have brought him
a new life in England, and even a new career at Tottenham.
Speaking of football, many physical skills are transferrable across countries, right?
Because for physical skills you mainly use your body, not your language.

But to integrate all the physical skills and go deeper, you definitely need language skills for that.
The football player, Son Heung-min does such a great job for that, so today I am going to meet him near here and,

한국인 선수이지만 영어를 익혀서, 이 언어능력을 기반으로 영국에서 새로운 생활을 보내고 있습니다.
토트넘이라는 팀에서 커리어를 쌓는 것도 포함해서 말이죠. 축구에서 신체적인 기술들은 세계 어디서나 통하죠?
언어와는 달리 신체 능력만 충분하다면 어디서든 통할 수 있어요. 하지만 신체적인 기술들을 종합하고 더 깊이 파고드는 단계에 이르면, 반드시 언어 능력이 동반되어야 하죠. 축구선수, 손흥민 선수는 이런 부분을 아주 훌륭하게 해냈죠. 오늘 이곳에서 손흥민 선수를 만나서 이야기를 나눠볼게요.

So here I am. I am near the Tottenham stadium. There are some pitches.
So, this is the pitch where Son is going to join, and here Son is going to teach Tottenham local kids
some football skills, like shooting, passing and dribbling.

So that must be really good for the children. So I’m going to wait here for Son to join us, and I’m also going to have an interview with him about his journey in learning the English language, and we’re also going to have a fun language session with the children as well. I’m so excited. Let’s wait for him.

 

토트넘 스타디움에 도착했어요. 축구 경기장들이 보이네요. 바로, 이 경기장에서 손흥민 선수가 토트넘 유소년들을 가르쳐 준다고 하네요. 슈팅, 패스, 그리고 드리블 같은 축구 기술들 말이죠.
아이들에게 큰 도움이 될 것 같아요. 손흥민 선수가 올 때까지 기다릴게요.

오늘 인터뷰는 영어를 배우는 과정에 대해 얘기하며, 아이들과 함께 재미있는 세션도 할 거예요. 정말 기대되네요, 자 기다려볼까요.

여기서부터 본격적으로 손흥민선수가 영어회화를 어떤식으로 공부했는지 공부법에 대해서 알려주십니다.

 

Q) So now you’ve been playing for Tottenham Hotspur for nearly four years, and you are now staying in England, communicating with people in English, so how was your journey in learning the English language? How was your first start?


손흥민 선수는 거의 4년 동안 토트넘에서 경기를 뛰고 있어요.
지금 영국에서 살면서 사람들과 영어로 소통하죠. 영어는 어떻게 배우셨나요? 영어를 처음 배울 때 어떠셨어요?

 

 

Yes, when I first came to England, or London, actually I couldn’t speak English well,

but I had lessons, like six months, but I think the best thing to do is speak with your friends.
So even when you make mistakes, still I make the mistakes, and the players or the friends try to teach me
how to speak and how to spell.

And I think this was very important to learn English, and yes, right now my English is not so good for me,
and still a lot to do to improve, but I think the friends and the players helped me a lot to speakbetter English than before. And Dele Alli and Harry Kane are your best British mates.


제가 런던에 처음 왔을 때 영어를 잘 못했어요. 그래서 6개월 동안 영어 레슨을 받기도 했는데, 그냥 친구들하고 이야기하는 게 가장 좋은 방법이었던 것 같아요. 제가 잘못 말하더라도 물론 지금도 실수는 종종 하는데, 그럴 때마다 선수들과 친구들이 어떻게 말하고 발음하는지 알려줬어요. 친구들과 소통하는 부분이 영어를 배울 때 중요하다고 생각해요. 그리고 아직 제 영어는 그렇게 뛰어나지는 않죠. 아직 부족해요. 하지만, 친구들과 선수들이 영어 실력 향상에 도움을 줬거든요. 그래서 점점 좋아지고 있어요.

Q) Are they also helping you to learn more about English?

Dele Alli 선수와 Harry Kane 선수가 가장 친한 동료라고 하신 적이 있는데,
영어를 배우는 데에 있어서도 도움을 줬나요?

Yes. Those guys helped me really, really a lot, because, especially Dele,
I was always speaking a lot, today as well, every single day we had fun, every single day
jokes without end. So I think this has helped me a lot. Like I said before, the players helped me really, really a lot to speak English.



네, 큰 도움을 받았죠. 특히 Deli Alli 선수와는 이야기를 정말 많이 해요,
오늘도 그랬고요. 매일 같이 재미있게 놀고, 농담도 하고 그래요. 제가 생각하기에는 이게 큰 도움이 됐던 것 같아요.
좀 전에 말했듯이, 영어로 말할 수 있게 이 선수들이 도움을 많이 줬죠.

Q) And you used to play for Germany, and, at the time, 
you were not really good at English, I believe, and now you are quite fluent and you can manage to speak in English. Do you think that helped you build more of a career for you?

독일에서도 경기를 뛰신 적이 있는데, 그때는 제가 알기로는 영어를 그렇게 잘 하지 못했던 것으로 알고 있어요.
지금은 영어로 유창하게 말하고 소통도 편하게 하시네요. 영어 능력을 이렇게 향상시킨 것이 선수 커리어에도 도움을 주셨다고 생각하시나요?

Yes, I think learning English or some other language has always been an advantage,
so as well, after my career or when I finish football, I can do something with my language.
I think this… I really enjoy to learn some English or some German
when I go, I don’t know, somewhere else as well. I think this shows some respect also to the country.
I’m really enjoying to learn English, speaking English,
even when I’m not speaking well, but it’s really, really fun to learn another language.


네 영어나 다른 언어를 배우는 건 항상 도움이 된다고 생각해요. 그리고 제가 축구 선수를 은퇴한 후에도 언어 능력으로 뭔가 다른 일을 해볼 수도 있죠. 음… 저는 즐겁게 영어를 배우고 있고, 독일어도 조금 배웠어요. 제가 다른 나라에 간다고 해도 똑같이 공부를 할 것 같아요. 언어를 배우는 일이 그 나라를 존중하는 방법이라고 생각하거든요.
저는 영어를 배우는 게 정말 즐거워요. 유창하게 말하지 못하더라도, 다른 언어를 배우는 건 정말 즐거운 일이죠.

Q) But I think you are speaking English quite confidently. Did you have any tips for building up your confidence for English?

근데 손흥민 선수는 지금 굉장히 자신감 있게 영어로 말하고 있어요. 
영어에 자신감을 가질 수 있었던 팁이 있을까요?

I’m the type who is always trying something. I said before already, when I make a mistake, I try to keep saying the same things. Of course, you will make mistakes because it’s not 100% your language,
but I think it’s most important you try and fix the problems and fix the mistakes. I think this is the most important part of my English. I don’t know, some people have a different way to learn some language, but for me it was really, really important to try every single day. When I went to school,

I learned something, I used this straight away when I came to the training and to the teammates,
and I think this helped me a lot. I don’t know if it’s worked, but you should try to work like this and probably it’s helpful.

 

저는 계속 무언가를 시도하는 사람이에요. 앞서 말했듯이, 저는 실수를 하면, 반복해서 말하면서 실수를 고쳐보려고 해요. 물론 자기 모국어가 아닌 이상 실수를 할 수밖에 없죠.

하지만 계속 시도하고 문제점을 고치려고 하는 게 중요하죠. 그것이 제가 영어를 배우는 데에 가장 큰 힘이 됐다고 생각해요. 잘 모르겠지만, 사람마다 배우는 방법이 각자 다르겠죠?

하지만 저에게 있어서는 계속 매일 노력하는 게 정말 중요했어요. 어떤 새로운 걸 배우면 훈련할 때나 아니면 동료들과 대화할 때 바로 써보곤 했어요, 이게 도움이 많이 됐죠. 효과적인지 아닌지 잘 모르겠지만, 이렇게 계속 이야기를 시도하는 게 도움이 될 거라고 생각해요. 

 

 

Q)And you must be still learning English now, right? And how do you keep carrying on your English study?

계속 영어를 배우고 계시는 거죠? 어떤 방법으로 영어를 계속하고 계시나요?

Yes. Sometimes I watch some series or some movies, try to watch in English and not with subtitles.
Of course, sometimes you don’t understand but you try to understand with the pictures.
Yes, I think for me it’s easier, because around me are all English friends who are speaking English,
and I think this is part of my football career as well, and my English as well.


네. 저는 가끔 드라마나 영화를 보는데, 자막 없이 보려고 하는 편이에요. 이해 못 하는 부분이 있지만. 영상을 보고 대략 이해할 수 있잖아요. 물론 제 주변에는 영어가 모국어인 친구들이 많아서 이 방법이 저에게 좀 더 쉬웠던 거라고 생각해요. 그리고 영어를 배우는 일은 제 축구 커리어의 일부이기도 하죠. 영어 실력도 포함이지만요.

 

Q) And my last question is can you tell English learners about how important learning
an English language is for you and for other people?


마지막 질문입니다. 지금 영어를 공부하고 있는 사람들에게 말해주셨으면 하는데, 영어를 배우는 것이 왜
손흥민 선수와 다른 사람들에게도 중요하다고 생각하시나요?

Yes. It depends how you take it, seriously or not, or you think, I need really English and probably you need it,
but what I said before, I think when you go to London, or when you go to England and when you go to America, you should learn English because you should show the country the respect. And if you’re someone from Korea, imagine one guy is coming from Europe to South Korea and he tries to learn South Korean;
if he doesn’t speak well, we’re enjoying watching him and enjoy listening to him. So think that’s the different way.

If you’re here in London, if you’re here in England, you should just try, make them enjoy to listen, to look.
I think this is most important to us, who want to learn English, and this is the most important part.

물론입니다. 어떻게 자신이 받아들이는지에 따라 달라질 수 있어요.
영어공부에 진지할 수도, 아닐 수도 있죠. 저는 정말로 영어를 배워야만 했어요.
하지만 앞선 인터뷰에서 말했듯이, 런던에 여행을 갈 때뿐만 아니라 영국을 갈 때나, 미국에 갈 때도 영어를 배우셨으면 해요. 그 나라에 존중을 표현하는 방법이니까요.
한국에 사는 사람이라면 이렇게 생각하면 될 것 같아요 유럽에서 어떤 남자가 한국으로 왔는데, 한국어를 배우려고 노력해요

말을 잘 못하더라도, 흥미롭게 지켜보고, 이야기하는 게 즐거울 거예요. 반대로 생각하면 됩니다.
런던에 오시거나, 영국에 오신다면 그냥 말하려고 노력하세요.
영국인들도 영어를 배우려는 사람과 재미있게 대화할 겁니다. 이렇게 소통하는 게 정말 중요하다고 생각해요.
